Can I share my fears with you?
Will you comfort my despair?
Will you always spare an open ear
where I can pour my troubles?
Will you support me in my struggle
to know better, to do better,
to be better than I am?
To overcome
the pressures that I,
as a black man,
am under?
Stereotypes that shape
flawed expectations
in great numbers?
I chose you
because you
put me at ease -
make me feel safe
enough to set aside
my cowl and my cape.
To be. To just be me
without a bar I must live up to
except to bare my soul enough to love you.
