Guarded Feelings

I wish she felt
completely free with me...
So secure
she’d allow me to draw
her out of her inhibitions.
Safe enough to slide
her reservations aside
and dive head first
into the pool of my passion.
I want to be her comfort,
be her peace.
Be that sanctuary
where she can release
her butterfly
from its cocoon
and feel the flutter
of her own wings
aloft in the skies
carried on comfort I’d bring
to lift her spirit.
But she will never trust
to that degree.
That kind of freedom
is but a distant luxury.
And sometimes I feel
whenever she touches me,
it is never with
all ten of her fingertips,
but at least she does clutch me
and somehow that
is still enough for me.
